Yerba Mate and the Thyroid – Is Drinking It Safe?

Yerba mate and the thyroid is a question we mostly get from two groups: people with Hashimoto’s on levothyroxine, and those who’ve just received a diagnosis and are looking for what to avoid. The answer at first glance is reassuring: yerba mate itself isn’t a substance that causes thyroid diseases. There are, however, two things worth genuinely knowing before you brew your first matero – one concerns the medication, the other caffeine. We break both down honestly, without scaremongering and without promising miracles.

Does yerba mate harm the thyroid? Short answer

There is no well-documented evidence that moderate yerba mate consumption causes thyroid disorders or worsens thyroid function. The thyroid reacts primarily to iodine, selenium, autoimmunity and genes — not to an infusion of Paraguayan holly. What actually matters when it comes to the thyroid and yerba mate are two separate issues: how you take your medication, if you take one, and how your body handles caffeine, if you have hyperthyroidism. We cover both below, concretely and without sugar-coating.

It’s worth separating two questions that customers usually lump together. The first: “does yerba mate damage the thyroid” — our answer is: we have no reason to think so. The second: “does yerba mate interfere with thyroid treatment” — and that’s actually a question about medication-taking technique, not about the infusion itself, and here there’s genuinely something to discuss.

Levothyroxine and matero — why timing matters

If you take levothyroxine, you’ve probably already heard from your doctor or read on the leaflet: take it in the morning on an empty stomach, wash it down with water, and wait half an hour to an hour before eating breakfast or drinking coffee or tea. This isn’t a whim. Tannins and plant compounds in infusions — in tea, coffee, and also in yerba mate — can bind with the hormone in the digestive tract and reduce its absorption. The same mechanism applies to calcium and iron supplements, which is why pharmacies also warn against washing down tablets with milk.

The practical rule is simple: treat matero the same way as your morning coffee. Medication on an empty stomach, water, wait — only then reach for yerba mate. A subsequent matero after breakfast or later in the day no longer matters much, since the medication has already had time to absorb. Have doubts about your dose? That’s a question for your endocrinologist or pharmacist, not for a yerba mate shop — they know your test results and treatment history, we don’t.

Hyperthyroidism and caffeine — worth keeping an eye on

With hyperthyroidism, for example in Graves–Basedow disease, the body is already running at higher revs: faster heart rate, anxiety, trembling hands, sleep problems. Caffeine from yerba mate can intensify these same symptoms, since it stimulates the nervous system and heart similarly to coffee. This doesn’t mean yerba mate is forbidden. It means that with hyperthyroidism it’s worth watching your own reaction more closely and not reaching for it reflexively throughout the day.

The rule we suggest in this situation: start with a weaker infusion and a smaller portion, check how you feel after an hour, and don’t combine matero with coffee or an energy drink on the same day. Heart palpitations and trembling hands after an infusion are a signal to slow down, not to keep going out of momentum.

Hypothyroidism — when energy is lacking

The opposite situation: hypothyroidism, most often in the course of Hashimoto’s disease, is often associated with chronic fatigue, sluggishness, and a craving for something to get you back on your feet. Here yerba mate tends to be well tolerated, since its caffeine acts more gently than in coffee — it’s accompanied by theobromine and theophylline, so the stimulation spreads out over a longer time instead of hitting all at once like an espresso. We write more about this mechanism in the article yerba mate vs. coffee.

One reservation must be stated outright here: fatigue caused by hypothyroidism is treated with medication and proper dose adjustment, not with an infusion. Yerba mate can be a pleasant part of the day, but never a substitute for treatment or an excuse to put off a check-up.

How to drink mindfully with thyroid issues — 5 rules

  1. Medication first, matero later. Wait 30–60 minutes after taking levothyroxine before brewing the dried leaves.
  2. Start with 2 tablespoons of dried leaves instead of a full matero, especially with hyperthyroidism. Less dried leaves in the brew means less caffeine in the infusion.
  3. Water at 70–80°C, never boiling. Gentler brewing gives a milder stimulant profile and better flavour.
  4. Watch your heart rate and sleep. Heart palpitations, shaky hands or insomnia are a signal to cut back or shift the time you drink. We cover drinking times in more detail in the article yerba mate and sleep.
  5. Regular check-ups, not guesswork. TSH levels and other markers are monitored by a doctor – no infusion can replace that.

Three options from our shelf – if you’re looking for a gentler ritual

Let’s be upfront: every one of the yerbas below contains caffeine, and none of them is a “yerba for the thyroid” – no such product exists. What they differ in is character, and that matters when you’re still learning how your body reacts.

Yerba De Brasil – Doypack 0.5 kg

A classic with no additions – pure dried leaves from Rio Grande do Sul. The best starting point, because you have full control over the strength of the infusion in the dose: two spoons to try it out, more only once you know how you react.

Yerba Mate – Herbal Balance

Yerba mate with six herbs: rosemary, peppermint, elderflower, nettle and boldo leaf. The herbs soften the flavour profile of the infusion – less raw bitterness, more greenness. The caffeine is still there, but the character of the infusion is calmer than in the pure classic, which some customers with a more sensitive stomach or nerves simply tolerate better.

Yerba Mate – Relax

A blend with lemon balm and chamomile (300 g pack) – the option chosen by people looking for a calmer daily rhythm. To be honest: it’s still yerba mate with caffeine, so in the evening you’re better off with plain lemon balm – but as an afternoon matero, Relax does exactly what its name says.

Purity of the dried leaves – that’s what we test for

When it comes to the thyroid and medication, there’s one more thing you as a buyer actually have real influence over: the purity of the leaves themselves. Our yerba grows in Brazil’s Rio Grande do Sul and is packed in Europe. Every batch is tested: GBA Polska checks for heavy metals, pesticides and PAHs, the Institute of Natural Fibres and Medicinal Plants confirms the authenticity of the dried leaves through chromatography, and J.S. Hamilton verifies compliance with the reference standard. On top of that, there’s HACCP, KIWA certification, Swiss OROTAL oversight and the Quality Certificate from the National Medicines Institute. We publish the full list of reports on our research page.

These documents don’t say anything about your thyroid – but they say a lot about what your infusion does NOT contain. Since you drink yerba regularly, alongside the medication and caffeine issue, this is the list that should matter most to you.

Frequently asked questions about yerba mate and the thyroid

Does yerba mate harm the thyroid?

There’s no well-documented evidence for this. Moderate drinking is not linked to thyroid disease – that depends mainly on iodine, selenium, autoimmunity and genetics.

Can I drink yerba mate while taking levothyroxine?

Yes, but with a gap. The medication is taken on an empty stomach with water, and matero – like coffee or tea – is best delayed by 30–60 minutes so that tannins don’t limit hormone absorption.

Does yerba mate raise TSH?

We haven’t found any basis for that claim, and we don’t make that promise ourselves. TSH levels are monitored by a doctor based on blood tests – no infusion regulates it.

How long should I wait between thyroid medication and yerba?

Standard is 30–60 minutes, the same as with coffee or tea. If you have doubts about your treatment schedule, ask your doctor or pharmacist – they know your dosage.

Can you drink yerba mate with Hashimoto’s?

In most cases yes, as long as you keep a gap from your medication. If alongside Hashimoto’s you also have hyperthyroidism or heart palpitations, it’s worth drinking a weaker infusion and observing your body’s reaction, or possibly consulting your doctor.

Does yerba mate contain iodine?

It’s a land plant, not algae or fish, so it isn’t a significant source of iodine and can’t be treated as a supplement for deficiencies. If your doctor has recommended a specific iodine-rich diet, base it on products that actually deliver on that – yerba here is just a flavour and energy addition, not part of the therapy.
