Traditional Bombilla (Straw) – GOLD from Yerbador
The Yerbador yerba mate bombilla has a perforated lower end that acts as a metal filter, used to separate the mate infusion from leaves, stems and other mate debris, working in a similar way to a perforated metal strainer in a teapot.
Let’s check which bombilla for yerba mate works best. A universal flat spoon straw ending in a strainer is a very popular model. This type of bombilla filters the infusion and prevents leaves and twigs from getting into the straw. The quality of the material used to make the yerba mate bombilla determines how long the same straw can be used. The better the material – in this case the metal alloy – the longer the bombilla will last. After several months of intensive use, a nickel-plated bombilla shows signs of wear and it’s worth replacing it with a new one.
Filtering yerba mate – which bombilla to choose?
Bombillas for yerba mate are used to sip the filtered infusion and to tamp down the dried leaves in the vessel while pouring water. You can choose a tube ending in a flat spoon or a spiral one. A universal bombilla with a flat tip works well for medium-fine dried leaves made up of 100% pure leaves.
The tube of a yerba mate bombilla should keep all the dried leaves, twigs and plant additives inside the vessel. Spiral tips are more often used for yerba varieties that contain small branches or various additions such as seeds, flower petals or dried, finely chopped fruit.
Bombillas for yerba mate – straws and tubes with a strainer
A straw for yerba mate, also called a yerba mate tube, is used to strain the infusion and reach the very bottom of the vessel. That’s exactly where the most aromatic infusion, so loved by mate connoisseurs, collects. A bombilla is an essential tool for extracting everything that’s best from the leaves of the Paraguayan holly. Without it, you couldn’t reach the most flavourful notes of the aromatic infusion. A yerba mate bombilla is a must-have for every mate lover.
Although straws for yerba mate are designed for straining the dried leaves of the Paraguayan holly, they can also be used to filter and drink other herbal infusions. There’s nothing stopping you from sipping green tea or common chamomile through a yerba straw.
Yerba mate set + bombilla
The Yerbador shop offers the yerba mate bombilla both separately and in sets with dried leaves and a vessel. The Yerbador Yerba Mate Set in an airtight tube includes a Matero vessel with a capacity of about 300 ml and a traditional bombilla.
A bombilla in a set with a vessel and dried leaves is a great gift idea. The yerba mate starter pack is a complete set that lets you try authentic yerba right away. This gift will delight anyone curious about new flavours.
How do you drink yerba without a bombilla?
It’s hard to imagine brewing yerba mate without a gourd-shaped vessel and a tube/straw ending in a strainer. A yerba mate bombilla seems absolutely essential. It turns out, however, that you can use a French press-style brewer to prepare an infusion of Paraguayan holly. The dried leaves are poured into the brewer, covered with hot water (max temp. 80 degrees Celsius), and after a few minutes the plunger is pressed down to separate the grounds from the infusion. Drinking yerba from a brewer is convenient, but does it have the same charm as holding a stylish Matero in your hand and sipping mate from the bottom of the vessel through a bombilla – judge for yourselves!
