Many of us associate drinking yerba mate simply with pouring water over the dried leaves. Nothing could be further from the truth – for those who aren’t fond of the traditional taste of the infusion, there are many alternatives to diversify the preparation and flavour of this popular dried Paraguayan holly. Let’s remember that the stimulating vitamins and minerals are found in the holly leaves, but what we add to it depends solely on us – only our imagination limits us. Of course, tastes are subjective, and not everyone has to enjoy the intense aroma of the infusion, so we present a few suggestions on how to diversify the consumption of the nutrient-rich yerba mate infusion.

Yerba mate with fruit juices
The taste of yerba mate depends on the variety of holly and the additions mixed into it. Of course, you can choose ready-made blends, but unfortunately manufacturers aren’t always honest with us, and in those fruit blends there’s hardly any real fruit, plus their flavour may be artificially enhanced, so they don’t always fully deliver what we expect. That’s why, if we want to try different flavours and modify our favourite infusion every day, a good idea might be to add any additions in the form of fruit juices, and the taste will certainly be original. We can add a bit of lemon or orange juice, or other citrus fruits, to our infusion. We can even use orange, grapefruit, or even banana juice instead of water to pour over our dried leaves – as mentioned above, only our imagination limits us.
Yerba mate with herbs
Many companies also offer yerba mate with herbs, but we believe the most interesting way to discover a new flavour is to experiment on your own. Yerba mate with mint is extremely popular, thanks to which the infusion we drink gains not only a great taste and aroma but is also very refreshing. Additionally, yerba mate with added or infused mint helps with digestive issues. So if we’re bored with the traditional taste of yerba mate, we believe it’s worth adding some variety in the form of mint or other commonly available herbs such as nettle, chamomile, cistus, or horsetail.
Yerba mate with honey or sugar
If the taste of yerba mate is too intense for us and we prefer sweetened drinks, there’s nothing stopping us from adding honey, sugar or any other sweeteners to the yerba. Of course, yerba won’t lose its properties, but it will definitely be healthiest with natural honey. Very often after consuming yerba mate we feel a sense of fullness, so a sweetened infusion can be a substitute for calorie-rich and sweet snacks.
Yerba mate with milk, or Mate de Leche
Many people might think that hot milk instead of water doesn’t go well with yerba mate infusion. However, nothing could be further from the truth — we believe it’s worth experimenting and giving everything a chance.
As for the preparation of yerba mate with milk, the technique is exactly the same as with water. The whole amount of dried leaves should be poured over with milk at a temperature of about 70 to 80°C and drunk through a bombilla. Another way is to brew the yerba with water, strain the leaves from the water, and then add milk, just like with the very popular Bawarka.
For this type of yerba mate infusion, matero made of gourds or other natural materials are not recommended. The best solution is ceramic vessels available on our website Yerbador.pl. We can also add many spices to Mate de Leche to give our infusion an autumn or winter character. Cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg, star anise or other spices work great in this role. The milk can also be sweetened with honey or brown sugar. Such an unusual yerba mate will certainly bring back nostalgic rainy autumn evenings or the magic of Christmas.
If you feel that coffee no longer serves you well, it’s worth giving it up for a while and giving a chance to Yerbador and the preparation method described above.
Cold yerba mate, or Terere
Terere, or cold-brewed yerba mate, can be a great alternative to sweetened drinks. Fans of our dried leaves Yerbador as well as connoisseurs of yerba mate will certainly enjoy this way of drinking dried Paraguayan holly leaves. This refreshing version works great on warmer days. Fans of Yerbador know best that in such heat there’s nothing better than cold terere! Anyone who has tried yerba mate brewed cold and hot notices the difference in taste – cold mate is less tart and bitter, and sweeter than the one brewed hot.
Terere, just like hot mate, improves concentration, suppresses appetite, refreshes and stimulates. Thanks to its antioxidant content, it reduces oxidative stress. It acts a bit slower as a stimulant than hot yerba mate, but it refreshes perfectly.
Terere is particularly popular in Paraguay, where high temperatures – reaching around 40 degrees Celsius – are an everyday occurrence.

How to prepare Terere
We pour the dried leaves into a special vessel for drinking yerba mate – this is important, as it will allow us to prepare the infusion properly.

A bombilla (a straw with a strainer) will also be needed, also available for purchase in our shop, and is necessary due to the specifics of drinking yerba mate.
Pour very cold water over the dried leaves and wait a few minutes for the leaves to release their juices.
Then add the rest of the cold water and add ice cubes for an even greater refreshing effect.
