WHAT IS A BOMBILLA?

A bombilla is a special straw made of stainless steel, silver, platinum or bamboo, ending in a strainer, which lets you easily filter your yerba mate and separate the infusion from the leaves.
At the bottom of the straw there is a filter of various shapes.
The bombilla ensures that fine particles of the dried leaves are filtered out.
Centuries ago, the Indigenous peoples living in Paraguay were the first to discover the wonderful effects of the Paraguayan holly — the plant gave them energy while reducing the feeling of hunger.
At first they chewed the holly leaves, later discovering the same effect when brewing an infusion.
They strained the drink made from dried leaves and twigs through their teeth, but this wasn’t pleasant and was quite troublesome, as small particles would get stuck in the throat and on the teeth.
They came up with the idea of drinking the infusion through a tube made of reed or bamboo, plugging one end and perforating it — this is how the first bombilla was created.
However, it had its drawbacks — it wasn’t durable and would quickly rot if left soaked in the infusion for too long.
Later on, the bombilla was improved by making it out of metal.
Today, however, we have a very wide selection of bombillas, differing in material, shape and filter type.
The following types of bombilla tips can be distinguished:
- Bombilla with a bomb-type filter – best suited for dusty yerba mate, it has a very large suction surface.
- Spoon-shaped bombilla – the most common type, with a very practical filter that strains even fine dried leaves, and is also great for stirring the infusion.
- Spring bombilla – a very functional design, the spring is plugged with a cork-like element. Filtering happens through the gaps between the coils. The downside is that the filter often gets clogged.
- Piston filter bombilla – the upper and lower parts of the piston fit together to form a thread that screws into the tube. Filtering is weaker than with other bombillas, so it’s best suited for coarsely cut dried leaves.
In our opinion, the most advantageous bombilla is the one with a spoon-shaped filter, as it only lets through tiny fragments of dust, which increases comfort when drinking the infusion.

Craftsmanship
The material our straw is made of affects the durability of the accessory.
The most durable ones are those made of metal, such as stainless steel, silver or alpaca. There are also bombillas available on the market made of bamboo and nickel-plated ones – however, these aren’t entirely hygienic, and unfortunately such straws are less durable and more prone to damage.
Bombillas often also feature cooling rings. They not only have aesthetic value but also prevent the mouthpiece from heating up while drinking the infusion.

BOMBILLA – HOW TO USE IT AND HOW TO TAKE CARE OF IT
In order to use the straw properly, we must first rinse it with water to get rid of various impurities.
Next, at the bottom of the vessel, we form a small mound of yerba mate leaves or powder and moisten it slightly.
We insert the bombilla into the vessel so that the filter touches the mound perpendicularly.
We rest it against the wall of the vessel and pour in water.

After enjoying the infusion, we take out the straw and rinse it under water, washing away any remaining dried leaves.
We also wash it on the inside (for this task you can buy a special bombilla cleaner, whether you’ll need it depends on how the straw was made and how easily you can access its internal parts).
Special attention should be paid to cleaning the filter, as we don’t want it to get clogged. After some time of use, deposits can build up inside the filter and straw, and if too much accumulates, it can change the taste of the infusion. That’s why it’s recommended to clean the bombilla, preferably under running water; if the dirt is stubborn, you can use baking soda, which easily removes deposits.
WHAT TO PAY ATTENTION TO?
Above all, the bombilla must be matched to the vessel in which you drink your yerba mate. This way you won’t waste a single drop of infusion at the bottom of the vessel that you can’t reach because, for example, your straw turned out to be too long!
