Guarana – What It Is and What It Helps With

Guarana - seeds and powder

Guarana holds a status in Brazil that’s hard to find in other energizing plants – it’s not a trendy addition from the last few years, but a raw material that the local peoples of the Amazon knew and used long before anyone in Europe had heard the word. At Yerbador we’ve been pairing it with yerba mate for years, so the question “what actually is guarana” comes up regularly – time for a concrete answer.

What is guarana

Guarana (Paullinia cupana) is a vine growing in the Amazon, mainly in Brazil, whose seeds, once dried and ground, produce a powder with an exceptionally high caffeine content – more than coffee beans, by weight. The indigenous peoples of the Amazon, primarily the Guarani and Sateré-Mawé, have used it for generations as a natural source of energy and focus, preparing it as a paste or infusion. The characteristic red fruit with a black seed and white flesh is sometimes compared in appearance to a human eye – this is actually the basis of one of the local legends about the plant’s origin.

Why guarana energizes differently than coffee

Caffeine from guarana is released into the body more slowly than from coffee, because it’s partly bound to natural tannins contained in the seeds. In practice, this means an energy boost spread out over time – a less abrupt rise, but also a less abrupt drop, without the typical coffee crash after two hours. This is one of the main reasons why guarana has gained so many fans among people who gave up coffee precisely because of that mid-day energy slump.

On top of that, there are saponins and tannins, which are credited with additional support for concentration and psychophysical performance – that’s why guarana is a common ingredient in supplements for athletes and people working under time pressure, not just in energy drinks from the petrol station shop.

Guarana Energy & Vitality

Guarana vs. shop-bought energy drinks – not the same thing

It’s worth separating two things that people often confuse: guarana as a plant raw material and “guarana” as a marketing buzzword on a can of colourful energy drink. Most popular energy drinks contain trace amounts of guarana extract – a few milligrams, mainly for the label – and the real energy kick comes from synthetic caffeine and a hefty dose of sugar. Real guarana powder, or guarana combined with yerba, is a completely different league: a much higher concentration of active compounds, no sugar, no artificial colours or flavours. It’s a difference similar to the one between freshly squeezed juice and a drink “with fruit flavour”.

Guarana and Yerba Mate – a combination that makes sense

At Yerbador, guarana rarely appears on its own – we most often combine it with classic Yerba Mate, creating the Ultra Energy line. This combination isn’t accidental: Yerba Mate provides a broad base of micronutrients and a gentler, more “spread out” stimulation throughout the day, while guarana adds a stronger, more concentrated energy boost. Together they create a blend that works well on days when yerba alone isn’t enough, but coffee would already bring too much jitteriness.

Our plantations and Yerba Mate production tradition date back to 1951 – the guarana we combine with the dried leaves comes from fresh harvests, not from processed raw material stored for months, which directly translates into the intensity and freshness of the flavour of the finished infusion.

Guarana and metabolism

As with Yerba Mate, the caffeine contained in guarana speeds up thermogenesis – the process by which the body uses more energy to produce heat, which in practice means a slightly faster metabolism in the hours after drinking it. This isn’t a mechanism that slims you down on its own, but combined with physical activity it can be real support – which is why guarana so often appears in pre-workout supplements, not just in the context of pure mental energy. An additional benefit: higher energy and less fatigue during the day also means less temptation to reach for quick, sweet snacks during moments of low form.

Who is guarana for

For people who regularly experience energy slumps in the middle of the day and are looking for something stronger than Yerba Mate, but without the jittery kick typical of coffee drunk on an empty stomach. For students and people working under deadline pressure who need focus spread over several hours, not a one-off jolt. For athletes looking for natural support for performance before training. However, we don’t recommend it in the evening – due to its high caffeine content, drinking guarana after 4-5 pm can genuinely make it harder to fall asleep, just like any other strong caffeinated drink.

Who should be careful with guarana

Because of its high caffeine content, guarana is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women, children, people with high blood pressure, heart rhythm disorders, or caffeine sensitivity – in these cases it’s best to consult a doctor before reaching for it, just as with any other strong source of caffeine. For a healthy adult, one to two servings a day is a safe range – more doesn’t mean better here, and too much caffeine from any source ends in heart palpitations and irritability, not extra energy.

How to start – powder or a ready-made blend with yerba

If you want to feel pure guarana and decide the dose yourself, the simplest solution is guarana powder – you can add it to smoothies, yogurt, or dissolve it in water. If you prefer a ready ritual without fiddling with proportions, a better start is yerba mate with guarana in a single doypack, brewed exactly the same way as classic yerba, just with a stronger final effect.

One practical tip to finish: start with a smaller dose than your urge to “feel something strong right away” suggests. Guarana works powerfully enough that half the standard serving for the first time is a wiser choice than a full one – you can increase the dose once you know how your body reacts to it.
