FAQ – bombilla in questions and answers

Is a bombilla necessary for drinking yerba mate?

For classic drinking from a matero – yes, because the dried leaves float in the infusion and without a filter you’d be drinking “with the grounds”. If you brew yerba in a teapot with a strainer or in a french press, a bombilla isn’t necessary, but you lose the ritual of successive refills that half of South America loves yerba for.

How often should you replace a bombilla?

A stainless steel bombilla, cleaned regularly, lasts for years. Replace it when the coating starts to flake (this applies to cheap nickel-plated models), the strainer is permanently clogged with sediment, or you notice a metallic aftertaste that cleaning doesn’t remove.
