Yerba Mate instead of coffee

For many years, people have wondered which infusion to choose — coffee, or dried Paraguayan holly leaves.

As for coffee, its properties were discovered around 3000 years ago. Initially, however, people didn’t quite know how to consume its fruit. It wasn’t until the fifteenth century that people began roasting the seeds and then preparing an infusion from them.

Yerba mate differs from coffee in many ways, most notably in that it’s made from dried and crushed leaves of the Paraguayan holly, which grows in four South American countries: Paraguay, Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay. The first discoverers of yerba mate, or rather the Paraguayan holly, were the Indigenous people, who initially chewed fresh leaves of the plant. It was noticed that it boosts energy and increases concentration, while reducing the feeling of hunger. Only later did people begin preparing an essence from dried leaves, which we know to this day as yerba mate. As we can see, both infusions share one common denominator, and that is stimulation. But which one should you choose?

Yerba or coffee?

As we mentioned, the common denominator for both infusions is stimulation, but in both cases it works completely differently. After coffee, the wake-up effect is almost immediate, but the moment the caffeine wears off, we completely lose energy and our mood worsens. After drinking coffee, the effect of stimulating substances in the body of an average person lasts around 3-4 hours. Unfortunately, after that time, their level drops drastically, and the only “rescue” is usually another coffee.

In the case of yerba mate, the energy boost is stable and long-lasting, without a sudden loss of energy. This happens because, alongside the flow of energy after drinking yerba mate, relaxing substances such as theophylline and theobromine are released,  which help lower blood pressure. In many cases, yerba mate helps regulate various bodily functions, so the body’s reaction to the infusion is more natural and gentler than with coffee. Moreover, yerba mate brings many beneficial properties, such as not flushing minerals out of the body.

Preparing yerba mate vs coffee.

As we all know, coffee is very simple to prepare. Coffee can be found in many forms, and the preparation process comes down to brewing water and adding your favourite additions. In the case of yerba mate, things are a bit more complicated, as the water must be prepared without exceeding a specific temperature, and the brewing process itself is quite unusual, though practised by many and even referred to as a ritual.

How to brew yerba mate.

First, pour the appropriate amount of dried leaves into the matero – at the start it’s recommended to use a slightly smaller amount, so you can get used to the flavour. Then cover the opening of the vessel with your hand and shake it a few times, so that the lighter particles end up on your palm. The dried leaves should be shaped into a so-called mound, meaning arranged diagonally at a 45° angle, so that on one side they reach the very top of the vessel, while on the opposite side they reveal the bottom. Pour a small amount of water, about 30-50 ml, into the empty space so that the leaves absorb it all. Then place the bombilla under the leaves so it stays stable. The last step is to pour water at a temperature of about 70-80 degrees Celsius over the leaves. The water should be poured slowly and not too forcefully. It’s worth remembering that once the straw is placed under the moist leaves, it should not be removed! This is recommended because stirring the herb causes it to break apart and can clog the bombilla, which in turn will not help you enjoy the flavour of yerba mate.

The taste of yerba mate versus the taste of coffee.

There’s no doubt that yerba mate has a very intense, distinctive and penetrating taste. It’s somewhat similar to green tea, but with a more herbal note.

Many people know the taste of coffee, but for those who don’t, coffee is often described as a sweet-sour-bitter drink.

Which infusion becomes your favourite is a matter of individual preference, since it’s hard to say definitively which type of infusion is better. We must make this decision ourselves, and for those who don’t yet know yerba mate, we encourage you to try it – it may stay with you for a long time. However, let’s remember that at the start it’s best to choose the highest quality infusion, with assurance from the manufacturer that it is organic.

Our product Yerbador contains 100% leaves, with no stems, and holds certificates confirming its organic status, so we’re not afraid to say it’s ideal and of the highest quality.
