Tereré on the terrace in summer – guampa with ice and citrus next to a thermos of cold water

Yerba Mate for Hotels and Spas – A Healthy Alternative to Coffee That Raises the Standard

A guest checking in at nine in the evening, tired after a flight, asks at reception for something warm, but “not coffee, because then I won’t be able to sleep”. Yerba mate for hotels and spas answers exactly this moment – it gives alertness without the evening heart racing, and on top of that it looks and tastes different from anything the guest knows from their home coffee machine. More and more venues in Poland treat matero with bombilla not as an exotic gadget, but as a permanent item on the menu: at reception, in the lounge bar, in the spa zone and on the conference tray.

Why hotels reach for yerba mate instead of yet another coffee

A health-conscious guest rarely asks only about the type of milk for their latte anymore. More and more often they ask whether the bar has something without sugar, without artificial additives and without the jittery kick that a third coffee of the day gives. Yerba mate fills this gap naturally: it contains caffeine (traditionally called mateine, chemically the same molecule), but accompanied by theobromine and theophylline, compounds that spread its effect over time instead of giving one sharp spike. On top of that, the dried leaves come from the Paraguayan holly (Ilex paraguariensis), rich in natural antioxidants, which wellness zone guests increasingly ask about.

There’s also a purely image-related argument. Brewing in a calabash gourd with a bombilla looks different from pouring coffee out of a buffet thermos – guests photograph it and often ask staff about it. For a hotel, that’s free content on a guest’s Instagram, generated by the guest themselves, without any marketing campaign on your part.

Four places where yerba mate works in a hotel

Reception and lobby. A thermos of hot infusion next to the water and coffee is a simple welcoming gesture that costs little but is remembered for a long time. The dried leaves are steeped once and can be drunk for several hours, so staff don’t have to stand by it every five minutes like they would with an espresso machine.

Lounge bar. This is the place for flavour versions: citrus, mint, fruit, served hot in winter and as cold tereré in summer, with ice and a slice of lime. It’s an item that sets the menu apart from the standard coffee-tea-juice line-up, without requiring a barista.

Spa and wellness area. More on this below – here the matero works differently than in the bar, because the guest is looking for calm, not an energy boost.

Conference catering. A coffee break with a yerba mate bar sticks in participants’ memory better than yet another jug of filter coffee. One large matero for several people and a thermos of hot water is enough to serve the whole room without a queue at the coffee machine.

Yerba mate in the spa – a ritual that completes relaxation

A guest coming out of a facial treatment or a sauna isn’t looking for a caffeine kick, but for something that will round off the state of relaxation. Warm yerba mate served in a calabash gourd works better here than an espresso from a machine – the milder, longer-lasting effect of the caffeine doesn’t disrupt the effect of the treatment, and the brewing ritual itself (pouring the water, the matero passed around, drinking together through one bombilla) is soothing in itself, if the staff show it to the guest on the spot instead of handing over a ready-made cup from behind the counter.

In practice, it’s enough for the spa receptionist to brew the matero in front of the guest and explain in one sentence where the leaves come from and how many times they can be topped up. It’s a few minutes of staff training, but for the guest it’s an experience that’s remembered longer than another drink from a machine. We described step by step how many times the same leaves can be topped up and how long to brew each round in our guide to brewing and drinking yerba mate.

Minibar and guest room – a healthy alternative instead of another coffee capsule

A standard hotel minibar consists of coffee capsules, instant tea bags, and sometimes a welcome chocolate. Dried yerba mate leaves in a small package (100-200 g) take up just as much space, yet give the guest something they won’t find at the hotel next door. All that’s needed for the room is a small matero or a regular cup with a strainer, a thermos of hot water from the floor staff, and a short note with brewing instructions – the rest happens on its own.

This solution makes particular sense in properties geared towards business and wellness guests: someone who makes a matcha latte or drinks yerba at home in the morning will be glad they don’t have to give up the ritual during their stay. A morning matero instead of the first coffee, a second round before an afternoon meeting – a rhythm many guests already know from their own office, since we wrote about it in our article on yerba mate for the office and coworking spaces.

What does this really cost – a calculation for a property

Before someone from purchasing asks about the budget, it’s worth having concrete numbers, not generalities. A starter set with matero, bombilla and dried leaves is a one-off cost per station (reception, lounge, SPA), not per guest. The dried leaves in a 200 g pack are refilled many times and last for several dozen servings, so the cost of a single cup works out lower than coffee beans put through an espresso machine. The Terremos Pro Max flask solves the logistics: one fill of hot water is enough for the entire morning peak at reception or for a coffee break in the conference room without plugging in another kettle.

For larger quantities – several points across the property, a fixed monthly delivery, an elegant welcome set for every room – we discuss wholesale pricing and delivery schedules individually. There’s no fixed minimum order threshold, because a seasonal seaside hotel and a year-round conference venue have completely different needs.

What starting a partnership with Yerbador looks like

No back-of-house revolution and no ordering a pallet for the first week. The scheme that works for our business partners looks like this:

Conversation – you describe the property and the spots where you see yerba mate fitting in (reception, lounge, SPA, conferences).
Samples – your team tests selected flavours with your own water and your own vessels.
Arrangements – we select variants, packaging and terms to match the property’s actual consumption.
Launch – you start with a trial set instead of a large wholesale order.

Yerba mate for hotels and SPAs – frequently asked questions

Does the staff need to know how to brew yerba mate?
No, preparing it is simpler than working an espresso machine – pour, wait a moment, serve with a bombilla. The team masters it in one short internal training session.

How much dried leaves are needed for a week’s work at reception or a lounge bar?
It depends on the venue’s traffic, but a 200 g pack, brewed multiple times, usually covers several dozen servings – we agree on exact conditions and quantities individually when discussing the order.

Can I order a sample before placing a bigger order for the whole venue?
Yes. In a conversation with Ewelina (contact above), you can arrange a smaller trial order before making a decision about a regular supply.

Is yerba mate suitable for serving cold in summer?
Yes, that’s tereré – the traditional cold version, with ice and citrus, works well by the pool and on the terrace. We described the preparation method in the article about tereré.

Will we get an invoice and terms for longer cooperation?
Yes, cooperation with hotels and SPA venues is based on invoices, with arrangements tailored to the venue’s seasonality and actual consumption.
