How to properly use a bombilla

How to deal with a bombilla?

In our daily sipping of the infusion made from Paraguayan holly, we can sometimes be bothered by a clogged straw or dust passing through the filter. This is usually caused by the fine texture of the dried leaves, which is actually a sign of the highest quality. First of all, before filling the matero, you should shake the package of dried leaves. The next step, which should make straw filtration easier, is to place it under the dried leaves and not stir the infusion with it, which makes it harder for the sediment to get inside the tube. Another tip is not to draw the yerba mate too strongly through the straw, as too much suction can cause the bombilla to clog.

How to properly drink yerba mate?

First, pour the right amount of dried leaves into the matero – it’s recommended to start with a slightly smaller amount to get used to the taste. Then cover the opening of the vessel with your hand and shake it a few times, so that the lighter particles and dust end up on your hand. The dried leaves should be shaped into a so-called mound, meaning arranged diagonally at a 45° angle, so that on one side it reaches the very top of the vessel, while on the other side the bottom is exposed. Pour a small amount of water, about 30-50 ml, into the empty space, so that the dried leaves absorb it all. Then place the bombilla straw under the dried leaves so it stays stable. The last step is to pour water at a temperature of about 70-80 degrees Celsius over the dried leaves. The water should be poured slowly and not too forcefully. It’s worth remembering that once the straw has been placed under the moist leaves, it shouldn’t be removed. This is recommended because stirring causes the herb to separate into layers and can clog the bombilla, which certainly won’t help you enjoy your yerba mate. If the dust still bothers you, you can strain everything through a sieve.
