Yerba Mate and Cellulite – Does Drinking the Infusion Change Anything?
2026-08-14
Yerba mate and cellulite is one of those pairings that, in a search engine, gets overgrown with promises, so let’s start with the answer: drinking the infusion does not remove cellulite. No drink does that, because cellulite isn’t about what’s in your cup, but about how the subcutaneous tissue on your thighs is structured. A cup of yerba won’t rearrange collagen septa or change your hormonal balance.
This doesn’t mean the topic is closed, though. Yerba mate has several specific effects that translate into how your skin looks and how you feel in your body: less retained water, more energy for movement, less sugar consumed during the day, better hydration. These aren’t miracles, just the small things that actually become visible in the mirror after a few weeks. Below, I break them down into their basic components.
What exactly is cellulite, and why doesn’t it disappear from drinking?
Cellulite is a change in the structure of subcutaneous fat tissue. In women, the septa made of collagen fibers that divide this tissue into chambers are mostly arranged vertically. When fat cells enlarge, they push the skin upward between the septa, while the septa pull it down. Hence the orange-peel texture. In men, the septa run diagonally and cross each other, which is why cellulite practically doesn’t occur in them.
Two things follow from this that are rarely mentioned on weight-loss blogs. Cellulite isn’t the same as being overweight, because slim women have it too, sometimes to a degree that surprises them. And the structure of the septa is largely a matter of genetics and estrogens, which the infusion has no influence over. So an ad promising smoother thighs after a month of drinking anything is selling you hope, not a result.
What can you actually change? The volume of fat cells in this area, the tone of the muscles beneath the skin, the amount of water retained in the tissues, and the condition of the skin itself. Four areas. Yerba mate helps with two of them, and only indirectly.
What does yerba mate actually do to the body?
Caffeine and mateine, or where the urge to move comes from
Holly leaves contain caffeine and theobromine. The effect is different than after an espresso: the stimulation kicks in more slowly, lasts longer, and less often ends in shaky hands. For someone choosing between a walk and the couch at six in the evening, that can be the difference between a workout and skipping it.
Here’s an important caveat, because this is where the internet lies the most. Caffeine really does appear in anti-cellulite cosmetics, and it makes sense there because it works locally, rubbed into the skin of the thigh. Drinking caffeine is a different story: your blood carries it all over your body, not to the one spot bothering you. There’s no such thing as spot reduction, and no drink can choose to target your buttocks specifically.
Polyphenols, of which yerba mate has plenty
An infusion of yerba mate is one of the richer sources of polyphenols among popular drinks. These compounds help protect cells from oxidative stress, and skin is an organ like any other that benefits from this protection. We wrote about this in more detail in the article Yerba Mate and Skin. Just don’t expect polyphenols to smooth out your thigh. They work in the background, over years, together with the rest of your diet. It’s an investment, not a treatment.
Hydration, which everyone forgets about

Dehydrated skin looks worse. It’s less firm, and the texture of cellulite becomes more visible because of it. The infusion is almost pure water and counts towards your daily fluid balance, contrary to the popular myth that caffeinated drinks dehydrate you. We looked into this in detail in the article Does Yerba Mate Hydrate Better Than Water.
If instead of two sugary drinks you drink two thermoses of yerba, over a week you save several hundred kilocalories. This translates very directly into body fat.
Does yerba mate help with water retention?
This is where it gets more interesting, because it’s the only mechanism through which the infusion can change the look of your legs from one day to the next. Water retention and cellulite are two different things, but visually they overlap. A leg swollen after eight hours at a desk, after a salty lunch, or in the second phase of the cycle simply looks worse. The skin is more taut, the texture more visible. When the swelling goes down, it looks better. The cellulite itself hasn’t changed, but you notice the difference.
In the Yerba Mate Slim Fit blend, alongside dried yerba mate leaves, you’ll find fennel and dandelion root, which help remove excess water from the body. Add to that rowanberry fruit and grapefruit extract, which support cell protection against oxidative stress. Yerba mate itself supports normal fat metabolism and maintaining a healthy body weight.

In practice: you drink a litre of Slim Fit spread throughout the day, you visit the bathroom more often, and in the evening your sock doesn’t leave a mark on your ankle. That’s it. No one has removed fat from your thigh, but your legs feel lighter, and that’s an honest description of what’s happening. A note on diuretic herbs: this isn’t an invitation to dehydrate yourself. You should drink more water during the day, not less, because a body that doesn’t get enough water retains it more strongly.
What really changes the look of skin on the thighs?
Since the infusion isn’t the solution, it’s only fair to say what is. No sugarcoating.
Muscles under the skin
The most underrated thing on this whole list. A toned quadriceps and glute muscle fill out the skin from underneath, making the texture less visible. Squats, lunges, deadlifts, climbing stairs with a bag of groceries. Two strength workouts a week do more here than ten creams. The first changes usually appear after two or three months, but they last.
A reasonable calorie deficit
Smaller fat cells push against the skin less. A calorie deficit works, but it has to be mild enough to let you keep training and sleeping properly. Crash diets at a thousand calories end in muscle loss, and that makes your legs look worse, not better. We laid out a concrete plan in Yerba Mate for Weight Loss.
Sleep and stress levels
Chronically elevated cortisol promotes fat storage and water retention. Six hours of sleep for half a year will do more damage to your figure than one pizza weekend. Yerba mate is helpful before noon and harmful in the evening, so watch the timing. More in our article on yerba mate and sleep.
Cosmetics, massage, treatments
Caffeine creams and dry brushing improve blood flow, and for a while the skin looks smoother. The effect is real but fleeting, disappearing once you stop. It’s an addition to movement, not a substitute for it.
How to drink yerba mate so it actually makes sense?
For a three-hundred-millilitre cup, I add two heaping spoons of dried leaves. I pour water at seventy to eighty degrees, never boiling, because boiling water draws bitterness out of the leaf. I drink the first infusion after two minutes. The same leaves can handle five or six infusions, so one portion lasts a whole morning.
At the desk, a thermos beats a cup. A litre of yerba mate sits beside you, you sip it over four hours and get up more often, which is better for leg circulation than eight hours of sitting still.
How much per day? Two to three servings, the last one no later than six hours before bed. We covered the details in our yerba mate dosage guide. The Slim Fit with beech scoop set has the advantage that you always measure out the same amount. It sounds trivial, but it’s the one thing that keeps your portion from creeping up week after week.
How does Slim Fit differ from regular yerba mate for this goal?
Classic Yerbador dried leaves are pure Paraguayan holly, dried with warm air, no smoke. It gives you stimulation, polyphenols and hydration, everything mentioned above. Slim Fit adds a herbal layer: fennel, dandelion root, rowan and grapefruit. If your main problem is heavy, swollen legs by the end of the day, this blend makes more sense. If you’re after energy and taste, the classic is enough. You’ll find a comparison of both versions in the article Slim Fit vs Regular.
By the way, since you often ask about this: the leaves in both blends come from Brazil, packaging takes place in Europe, and everything is covered by the Swiss OROTAL Commodities Trading SA certification and the HACCP and KIWA systems. We also hold a Quality Certificate from the National Medicines Institute. I mention this because the market for figure-support products can get pretty wild.
Which promises not to buy?
- An infusion that burns fat from your thighs and buttocks. Spot reduction doesn’t exist and never has.
- A detox that flushes out cellulite. Cellulite isn’t a toxin or a deposit, it’s a tissue structure.
- Guaranteed results in two weeks. Even well-run training and diet need two to three months.
- Laxative teas sold as a slimming cure. That’s not the same as herbs that support excess water removal, and it can end badly.
And the most important thing. If you’re pregnant, breastfeeding, have high blood pressure, a thyroid condition, venous circulation problems, or take medication regularly, consult your doctor about drinking yerba mate. This applies to any caffeinated beverage and any herbal blend, including ours.
FAQ, the questions we get asked most often
Does yerba mate remove cellulite?
No. Cellulite results from the structure of subcutaneous tissue and hormonal balance, and the infusion doesn’t change that. It supports hydration, provides polyphenols and adds energy for training, but it’s not a cellulite treatment.
How much yerba mate should I drink daily if I’m working on my figure?
Two to three servings, meaning a litre to a litre and a half of liquid. The last one no later than six hours before bed, so the caffeine doesn’t disrupt your night. Water remains the basis, yerba is an addition.
Is Slim Fit better than classic yerba mate for cellulite?
If you’re bothered by water retention and swollen legs in the evening, the blend with fennel and dandelion root makes more sense. Neither version works directly on cellulite itself.
Does yerba mate dehydrate you?
No. The infusion is mostly water and counts towards your daily fluid balance. The diuretic herbs in Slim Fit increase excretion of excess water, but that’s not the same as dehydration, as long as you drink normally throughout the day.
Does cold yerba mate work the same way?
Yes, tereré contains the same ingredients. Cold water draws them out more slowly, so the dried leaves are left overnight in the fridge. In summer it’s the simplest way to get more fluids without sugar.
How long before any difference is visible?
A reduction in swelling can sometimes be noticeable after a few days of regular drinking and watching your salt intake. A change in skin texture is a matter of months of work on muscles and body composition, and for some people it remains slight regardless of effort. Better to hear that from us than from an ad.
I have varicose veins, can I drink yerba mate?
That’s a question for your doctor, because the answer depends on your condition and the medications you take. Don’t make that decision based on an article on the internet, including this one.
In closing
Cellulite is not a failure and not a punishment for eating a cookie. Most adult women have it, including those in retouched photos. Work on what can be changed: movement, body composition, sleep, hydration and less sugar in your drinks. Yerba mate is a tool here, not a medicine. It replaces sugary drinks, helps you get up off the couch and gives you a dose of polyphenols. Want a herbal layer added to that? Reach for Slim Fit. Do you just like the taste of yerba? Classic dried leaves will do the job just as well.
