Let’s start by mapping out the terrain. Yerba mate is more widely available in Poland today than ever before, but the individual channels differ quite a lot from one another.

1. A specialist online shop. The widest selection, the fastest stock turnover, and a seller who knows what they’re selling. A shop that lives solely off yerba can’t afford to hold on to old stock — products move quickly, so you get fresh batches. Plus descriptions with concrete details: composition, origin, flavor profile, brewing method.

2. Tea shops and physical stores. The upside is obvious: you can smell the dried leaves and talk to the seller. The downside — yerba is usually a side shelf next to teas, so the selection can be modest, and turnover slower. In bigger cities you’ll find a few places with a decent offer, in smaller ones it can be scarce.

3. Supermarkets and discount stores. The easiest access, but also the narrowest selection — usually one or two items from the low price shelf. No one there will tell you about the packing date or storage conditions.

4. Allegro and other platforms. Prices can be tempting, but you’re buying from a middleman who’s often impossible to verify. You don’t know how long the pack sat in a warehouse or under what conditions. There are good deals, and there are disappointments too.

5. Herbal and health food shops. Yerba appears here more and more often, usually as “one brand, two flavors”. A good place for first contact, weaker for regular shopping once you already know what you’re looking for.

How to tell you’re buying in a good place

Regardless of the channel, there are a few things worth checking. It’ll take you two minutes, and it will save you from more than one bad purchase.

Composition of the dried leaves. Good yerba is above all about leaves. Stems (in Spanish “con palo”) are entitled to appear in classic blends, but when the bag looks like sawdust from a sawmill — that’s not a saving, it’s a waste of money. A reliable seller states clearly what the leaf content is.

Origin stated clearly. Yerba mate holly is grown mainly in Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay — each region gives the infusion a different character. Laboratory testing. Plant material from the other side of the world should be tested: heavy metals, pesticides, authenticity of the raw material. Shops that test their products are happy to advertise it publicly, because such testing costs money. No mention of testing combined with a suspiciously low price — the conclusion draws itself.

Packaging. Yerba mate doesn’t tolerate moisture, light or foreign odours. An airtight doypack with a zip closure makes a real difference, especially if you don’t drink a kilogram in two weeks. Airtight versions preserve the aroma longest.

Stock turnover. You won’t read this on the label, but you can judge it indirectly: a shop with an active community, fresh reviews and regular deliveries is a shop where the leaves won’t have time to go stale.

Yerba from the supermarket — is it a bad idea at all?

We’re not demonising it. If you’re standing in a shop, want to try mate for the first time in your life and spot yerba on the shelf, go for it — that’s a better start than none at all. You just need to know what you’re getting into: supermarket yerba is usually the cheapest segment, finely ground, with a high proportion of stems, no information about the batch or harvest date. The infusion will work, but the experience will be average. Many people, after such a first contact, decide that “yerba isn’t for me” — and then try a proper blend and change their mind within five minutes. So if it’s the supermarket, treat it as a stopover, not the destination.

The minimum cart value applies. Below that amount the system won’t let you complete the order, so if you want to add something else to the parcel, do it right away instead of ordering twice and paying for shipping twice.

Payment methods. Online payments are handled by PayU: bank transfer from any online banking, BLIK, Apple Pay and Google Pay. If you’d rather pay on delivery, choose DPD or InPost courier delivery and pay in cash or by card directly to the courier. One caveat: online-payment orders that aren’t paid for are cancelled and not processed.

Processing time. Orders placed and paid before 12:00 are shipped the next business day. If you place and pay for your order after 12:00, shipping is pushed back by one day, counting from the next business day. In short: pay in the morning and tomorrow the parcel goes to the courier; pay in the afternoon and it goes out a day later.

Delivery costs in Poland depend on the method you choose:

To Italy, France, Spain, Portugal and several other European countries the parcel is handled by Poczta Polska. Orders to the United Kingdom and the USA are also possible, but shipping costs more.

Returns and complaints. If something doesn’t work out, we handle complaints and returns exclusively through the online form, not by email.
