How to brew Yerba Mate step by step?

Yerba Mate is more than just a drink – it’s a ritual that combines tradition with a daily moment of relaxation and stimulation. To fully enjoy its flavor and properties, it’s worth knowing the basic rules of brewing it. It’s not difficult, but the details matter – from the amount of dried leaves, through the water temperature, to the way the bombilla is positioned. Below you’ll find a simple guide on how to prepare the perfect Yerba Mate.

How much dried leaves to put in the vessel?

The amount of dried leaves depends on how intense a flavor you like. Beginners are advised to fill about 1/4 of the vessel’s volume, i.e. about 2-3 tablespoons of Yerba. More experienced people often go for 1/2 or even 3/4 of the volume. It’s worth remembering that Yerba Mate leaves swell after pouring water, so the vessel shouldn’t be filled to the brim.

If you’re a beginner and using Yerba from Yerbador, you can choose milder blends with added fruit – perfect for those starting their adventure. The brand is known for its quality – their leaves contain 100% leaves, hot-air dried and aged for as long as 4 years, which guarantees a deep yet smooth flavour.

What water for Yerba Mate? Temperature and quality

Water is a key element of brewing Yerba Mate. It should be soft and have a temperature of around 70–80°C. Water that’s too hot can “burn” the yerba and give it a bitter taste, while water that’s too cold won’t release the aroma or caffeine.

Filtered or low-mineral water works well. If you don’t have a thermometer – just boil the water and wait about 10 minutes. Some people even use cold water – this version is called tereré, popular in South America and increasingly also in Poland.

How to position the bombilla in the matero and does the arrangement of the leaves matter?

Yes – and quite significantly! It’s worth tilting the leaves to one side of the vessel, creating a sloped “hill”. Then a little cold water is poured into the empty space and left to soak in – this way the Yerba won’t be immediately washed of its most valuable components. The bombilla (the filtering straw) is inserted into the lower part of the vessel, near the bottom, where there are fewer leaves. Important: don’t stir the infusion with the bombilla!

These are small details, but they make a huge difference. This method of preparation lets you enjoy Yerba for a long time – the intensity of flavour changes with each refill.

How many times can you refill one portion of Yerba?

It depends on the type of yerba, the thickness of the leaves and personal preference, but typically the leaves can be refilled with water even 4-6 times. With the first infusions, the brew will be intense and rich in caffeine. Later, the taste mellows and the caffeine content gradually decreases.

Some yerba drinkers claim that the infusion tastes best only from the second or third refill onwards. High-quality yerbas, like those from Yerbador, retain their flavour and properties for a long time – as confirmed by experienced fans.

Summary

Brewing Yerba Mate isn’t an art reserved for the initiated – you just need to know a few simple steps and choose good quality. The right amount of leaves, water at the proper temperature and a well-positioned bombilla are the secret to a tasty, invigorating infusion. Yerba from Yerbador, thanks to natural drying and long ageing, lets you enjoy a balanced flavour through many refills. Start with milder blends, experiment with the form and discover how much pleasure this South American ritual can bring – especially in its Polish rendition!
