Abstract

Introduction: Yerba Mate, also known as Paraguayan tea, is obtained from the dried leaves (about 95%) and stems (about 5%) of the evergreen shrub-tree Ilex paraguariensis. Every year, the consumption of yerba mate is becoming increasingly popular in North America and Europe. The trend for Paraguayan teas has also reached Poland. Between 2012 and 2018, an 8-fold increase in the import of this raw material to our country was recorded.

Aim of the study: The aim of this study is to analyse the current state of knowledge on the health effects of Yerba Mate based on selected scientific literature.

Discussion: Consuming yerba mate may have a beneficial effect on human health and is recommended in the treatment of obesity and during sports activities. However, it should be remembered that very high consumption of tea, especially very hot tea, may increase the risk of cancer, which has not been clearly confirmed by scientific research to date.

Conclusions: It has been confirmed that this beverage shows a number of beneficial health effects, including: a protective effect on liver cells, stimulation of the central nervous system, anti-inflammatory action, and a positive effect on the cardiovascular system.
