Yerba mate or Matcha? What to choose?
In our new article, we will compare the Japanese traditional Matche green tea with an infusion of dried leaves of the holly plant, better known as Yerbamate.
But Let’s start from the beginning by introducing both drinks.
Matcha in most cases comes from plantations that are shaded. Thanks to this, as green tea grows, it produces even more amino acids and, in addition, the infusion gains a much more penetrating and sweeter taste.
Matcha itself is made only from the youngest green tea leaves, which are then dried and ground into dust.
Matcha contains a huge range of different health values, which in Asian countries favors treating it as an exquisite or luxurious infusion. The powder produced by grinding dried green tea leaves contains cleansing chlorophyll and polyphenols, and above all others that influence our arousal.
Matcha brewing method – ritual.
The traditional method of preparing matcha comes from a Japanese ceremony called chanoyu. To prepare the drink, we need an appropriate vessel called matchwan, a bamboo whisk and a spoon. The traditional Japanese ceremony lasts over an hour, but preparing matcha at home takes much less time.
Pour 2-3 teaspoons of matcha into the vessel and then pour about 100 ml of water at 80°C. Then, we start mixing the packet intensively until a thick foam is formed. It usually takes about 30 seconds. By rubbing it against the bottom of the vessel, the bird is crushed even more, which creates a suspension thanks to which we drink the entire health content of the leaves. Then add more water depending on how strong you like to drink tea. Matcha is similar to coffee, some people drink it strongly, others prefer it diluted or with milk.
Yerba mate
What is yerba mate? – an infusion popular mainly in South American countries (Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, Brazil), also in some countries of the Middle East. However, more and more Europeans are using yerba mate. Yerba Mate are dried leaves and sticks of the holly plant, also known under the Latin name Ilex paraguariensis. This species of tree occurs only in certain areas of South America, Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina . Interestingly, the tree cannot be grown in other areas.
Scientific research on this product confirms that it contains chlorogenic acid, quercetin and rutin – substances with antioxidant and body rejuvenating properties. The biggest advantage of yerba mate over coffee and tea is the high content of valuable nutrients along with a huge dose of energy. Yerbador contains a number of B vitamins , including: B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7 and B9, as well as vitamin C and E. The ritual of brewing yerba mate
Many people, when they hear about the ritual of preparing Yerba Mate infusion, believe that it is quite difficult or time-consuming, which may certainly discourage beginner lovers of the infusion of dried holly leaves, as the key element in preparing this infusion is the appropriate water temperature. However, nothing could be further from the truth, because in South America, where Yerba Mate is a kind of national drink, a thermometer is not the most important accessory for brewing Yerba Mate.

Brewing method
First, pour the appropriate amount of dried herb into Matero . A slightly smaller amount is recommended to get to know the taste. Then cover the opening of the container with your hand and shake it several times to get the lighter particles onto your hand. The herb should be shaped into the so-called mound, i.e. arrange the herb obliquely at an angle of 45° so that on one side it reaches the very top of the vessel and on the other side it exposes its bottom. Pour a small amount of water, about 30-50 ml, into the free space so that the dryers absorb all of it. Then place the bombilla straw under the herb so that it remains stable. The last step is to pour the herb with water at a temperature of about 70-80 degrees Celsius. Water should be poured slowly and not too suddenly. It is worth remembering that after putting the straw under wet herbs, it should not be taken out. This is recommended because when mixing, the herb separates and may clog the bombilla , which will not help you enjoy yerba mate.
Comparison of Matcha and Yerba
Most compounds contained in plants have a similar effect – both of them cleanse the body of toxins, heavy metals, neutralize free radicals, or even delay the aging process, and have a positive effect on well-being and the digestive and nervous systems. When it comes to matcha, it will be more effective in the overall relaxation of our body, while Yerba will stimulate us to action without causing unpleasant and undesirable effects.
Both rituals seem difficult and time-consuming to perform, but the time is almost the same, so this should not scare us. In both cases, the steam adds strength and puts us in a state of peace, but most importantly, both infusions provide our body with a lot of positive values and minerals.
Let’s remember to choose the best products.
In the case of yerba mate, the quality of the infusion can be determined by the amount of dust contained in the herb. The more of it, the better and more intense the taste of yerba mate.
Another fact worth paying attention to when choosing a product is whether it contains only leaves, or maybe leaves and stems, because the highest quality infusion is characterized by NO stems and only ground holly leaves.
Also remember that the highest quality yerba should be organic.
Our Yerbador product contains 100% leaves, without stems and has all certificates confirming its organic nature, so we are not afraid to say that it is perfect and of the highest quality.
We encourage you to try Yerbador!
