Abstract

Introduction: Yerba Mate, also called Paraguayan tea, is obtained from dried leaves (about 95%) and stems (about 5%) of the evergreen shrub-tree Ilex paraguariensis. With each passing year, yerba mate consumption is becoming more and more popular in North America and Europe. The fashion for Paraguayan teas has also reached Poland. In the period 2012 – 2018, there was an 8-fold increase in the import of this raw material to our country.

Purpose of the study: The purpose of the study is to analyze the current state of knowledge about the health effects of Yerba Mate based on selected scientific literature.

Discussion: Consuming yerba mate may have a beneficial effect on human health and is recommended in the treatment of obesity and while practicing sports. However, it should be remembered that very large consumption of tea, especially very hot tea, may increase the risk of cancer, which has not been clearly confirmed by current scientific research.

Conclusions: It was confirmed that this drink has a number of beneficial health effects, including: protective effects on liver cells, stimulation of the central nervous system, anti-inflammatory effects, and a positive effect on the cardiovascular system.
